Background Summary

Irena Tolbert was born on June 21st, 1989 at the Children's Hospital at Buffalo, NY; although her parents lived in Ransomville (a rural area about a half hour away from Niagara Falls and an hour away from Buffalo) her mother was 42 when she had Runa, so the pregnancy was considered high risk. Runa was a dream come true to Anne and David Tolbert, who had been trying for children for twelve years before she was born, and although she wasn't spoiled too badly, she was a pampered only child. Anne Tolbert was and continues to be, a literature professor at Niagara University, a semi-prestigious Catholic college that focuses on Education and Human Service degrees. David Tolbert was a Science/Physics teacher at Wheatfield High School, which serves many of the rural districts between Niagara Falls and Lockport.

Irena was a precocious child, once refusing to run when another six year old tried to chase her with a toy Apatosaurus, because Apatosaurus' were herbivores, thus didn't eat people, and she wanted to be it's friend instead. She did this because she wanted to play “Let's pretend” not “Run and Chase”. Due to her parents professions, she was well-educated, both of her parents instilling her with a love of their respective fields, and Irena was an avid reader, loving books with exotic locales, and foreign cultures the best. She particularly enjoyed (and enjoys) Science Fiction that either explored the way human culture was changed by the experiences of space travel and foreign worlds, or ones that explored alien cultures. Her favorite books in grade school was the “My Teacher is an Alien” series by Bruce Coville. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Teacher_Is_an_Alien ), while in Middle School and High School, her favorite author was C. J. Cherryh. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._J._Cherryh )

Irena was able to get a full-scholarship to Cornell, and completed a Dual-Degree program, getting a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science, with a Minor in Anthropology. While she knew she wanted to pursue her childhood dream of writing stories for a living, she also knew she needed to eat while she did so, and she knew she needed to do so in a way that would not be soul-crushingly boring, as that would interfere with her creative spirit, so she looked for 'career' carefully, eventually finding a position as a programmer/ website designer/IT person for a small non-profit based in Queens, that specialized in assisting in making art and culture accessible to people with disabilities, particularly children. Although Irena now supports herself through her writing, she still spends a lot of time volunteering there, running creative writing workshops, and assisting her replacement with particularly tricky tech problems. Irena has two series that have obtained moderate popularity. The first, which is five books long, so far, is science fiction, and the second series, which only has two books so far, is steampunk. She makes a decent amount of money from writing, enough to support a middle-class lifestyle, and she currently lives in Briarwood, a neighborhood in Queens. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Briarwood,_Queens )

About a year ago, Irena was able to advise one of the regular attendees of her writing workshop, a 17 year old with an autistic spectrum disorder on how to get her work successfully published. This fulfilled her Seelie Legacy of Sage, awakening her as an Eshu. It was about six months before she ran into another changeling and found out what was going on. During that time, Irena believed she was going insane, but had not sought treatment, as she had loved the movie 'Harvey' as a child, and remembering the taxi driver's speech all too well, feared that treating it would kill her creative spirit. Irena's Unseelie Legacy is Virtuoso, which represents the importance of her craft to her, and the passion with which she pursues becoming the best writer she can possibly be.

About a month after meeting her first changeling, Irena met Sudhir, a more experienced Eshu, who took her under his wing. Sudhir took her on a six-month trip around Concordia, helping her establish contacts in various areas that she might want to travel to on her own, eventually. They also explored areas of the dreaming, having grand adventures, in which Irena had plentiful opportunities to practice the swordcraft that Sudhir taught her. It was on one such adventure that Irena obtained her chimerical rapier, a treasure formed around the fountain pen that John Spargo, an turn of the century muckraker, used to write “The Bitter Cry of the Children” and “Underfed School Children”. Sudhir also taught her the Art of Contract, and somewhere along the line, Irena began to refer to her Fae self as Runa. Irena has returned from her wandering greatly enriched, her mind full of new experiences, and full of ideas for new stories to tell.
